Making your home the best nest it can be

The Art of Thrift

Floor Models

We tend to covet things out of our price range.  I am certainly guilty of perusing around high-end home furnishing stores torturing myself with design eye candy.  And although I prefer vintage decor that can be found relatively inexpensively (or free from my brother’s storage unit filled with Mid-Century Modern gems), I can’t always resist what modern stores have to offer. However, I have managed to acquire certain pieces at a more reasonable cost because I don’t mind a little “character” in the furniture (aka, chip, bubble, scratch). I was able to score this $200 Klismos dining room chair from West Elm for $24 because it was a tad rickety from being a floor model. Nothing my girly green screw driver couldn’t handle.

I then found our rustic kitchen island all alone hidden in the back of the store because it had a bubble in the stainless steel top. This defect resulted in a 50% markdown. YAY for me!

So don’t be afraid to ask if the “floor model” is for sale or wait until the store has markdown events. You’ll be surprised at the discount you will receive.

Tea Towel Cafe Curtain

I don’t know about you, but one of the hardest things to find are cute tiny teeny curtains for small windows. For our half bath (half sized) window, I hung a $10.00 patterned tea towel from Hudson Boston by using a tension rod and clips.
