Clutter that Shutter
One holiday down – or two if you celebrated Thanksgivukkah.
Since Chanukah crashed Thanksgiving this year and Christmas is around the bend, it was time to get started on a holiday card display. We don’t have a mantel so need a creative way to show off the wonderful greetings we receive.
Last year I used twine and pinned it over two door way frames, added a few ornaments on each end and secured the cards with mini red clothespins. It looked cute, but I was looking for a new method that didn’t require adding more holes to our walls or using a step stool to hang them every time the mail came. I knew an idea would come to me, I just had to wait for it.
While on the Cape we visited an antique store and I saw these two old shutter doors.
That is when the lightbulb went off in my head. I was reminded of this idea from my “Repurpose Ideas of the Day” post and knew the wait was over.
The car was packed so had to leave these two beauties that sparked the idea behind, but went right to Boston Building Resource when I returned home and picked through their shutter collection.
I found this one for $11.00. It has two different paint colors on each side so I could play around with it to see which I liked better.
The slats are perfect for housing folding cards and the shutter can easily lean against a wall.
Don’t fret if you receive flat cards.
Use clips / clothespins to secure them to the slats.
You can adorn the shutter with festive ornaments to spice it up.
All done! (I switched to the lighter side). Now we wait for more cards…
Once the holiday season is over, there are many ways you can reuse the shutter. It can serve as a magazine holder or keep outside and hang flower pots from it. The possibilities are endless!

I love the idea below for the kitchen.
